From 1886 to 1900, HOLBROOK, halfway between Gallup and Flagstaff, was the rowdy headquarters of the “Hashknife” cattle outfit, the third largest in the country. Not much seems to have happened since, but traffic on Route 66 and I-40 has kept Holbrook ticking.
Unless you’re ready to stop for the night, there’s no great reason to stray off the interstate, though a romantic patch of Route 66 frontage survives along Navajo Boulevard, the main road through town.
